Montero’s Boner?
After a strange ending to the Padres - Diamondbacks game, with Lyle Overbay of all people drawing the walkoff walk, it has a fittingly strange controversy. After the Diamondbacks ran on the field to celebrate Overbay’s plate vision, Bud Black and the Padre coaches began yelling and pointing to third base in an appeal. Their basic point: Miguel Montero never touched third.
Unfortunately, the camera that had third base in its sights had panned over to the Diamondbacks dugout and as it came back down the line, Miguel Montero was already walking in. However, from the angle taken, unless he touched third base before darting back towards the middle of the field, he should be called out and the game would continue. Here is a screen grab of the incident:
After the game ended, Bud Black seemed satisfied after a discussion with the umpire’s so it will be interesting to see if he can or will file a formal complaint later tonight. At the moment, however, it seems that the game should have continued.
Rule 4.09(b):
When the winning run is scored in the last half-inning of a regulation game, or in the last half of an extra inning, as the result of a base on balls, hit batter or any other play with the bases full which forces the runner on third to advance, the umpire shall not declare the game ended until the runner forced to advance from third has touched home base and the batter-runner has touched first base.
As long as the runner touches first (he did) and the runner touches home (he did) the other runners don’t matter. Bud Back is wrong.
